Pag-Asa Opportunity Scholarship

“It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal. It is like a stone wasted on the field without becoming a part of any edifice.” -Dr. Jose Rizal, National Hero of the Philippines

The Pag-Asa Opportunity Scholarship rewards students of Filipino heritage graduating from South Tahoe High School. This scholarship was initiated by our Media Communications Director and STHS alumni, Renelle Pinero (’05), who saw a need for community support of young Filipino-Americans in the area. (“pag-asa” is the Tagalog word meaning “hope”).

Recipients of this scholarship show high levels of gratitude and respect for their families who have faced adversity in the American immigration and assimilation process. They display a passion for making the most of the unique set of opportunities granted to them with a strong work ethic, diligence, and optimism. Most importantly, they are looking to take the next step to develop themselves through education in order to give back to their community. They are the first in their families to attend college and are ready to embrace the next leg of the American journey.
